
Since the age of 17, Michael Gilger knew that he wanted be an artist and decided to pursue metal work to express his creativity. He has been in the jewelry business for 43 years, and during that time he designed for one of the largest gold manufacturer in the US with designs reaching over 85,000 retail stores.
In the year of 1989, Michael, his wife Judy, and his two sons Michael J and Justin, came to Ames. The family opened their store on Main Street in 2000. Gilger Designs specialize in designing and manufacturing wearable works of art that are both fresh and timeless. They also do their best to recycle customer’s gems and redesign old jewelry. All of the work necessary to creative such fine works of art takes place in the shop itself.
The family owned and run business takes pride in their unique designs. They work with many beautiful gems and stones, and in the store you will find many wedding sets, engagement rings, as well as other pieces of artistically designed jewelry.
Painting has also been a huge part of Gilger’s life, which he showcases on the walls of his jewelry store and also sells to his customers. Jay Leno owns three of his paintings. Stop in and see his latest paintings that are for sale.
“Main Street is so full of positive energy, good atmosphere, and an all around cool place with good people,” said Gilger. His favorite part of being on Main Street is being able to socially interact, and form relationships with their customers. Durban, their out-going black lab, calls the store her home, as she eagerly greets all of their guests with warm tail wagging. It truly is a family-run business with a friendly feel and relaxing atmosphere.
