Scottish Country Dance
Octagon Center for the Arts, 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.

The Scottish Country Dance group meets every Friday night at the Octagon Center for the Arts at 7:30, and it is in its 26th year as a part of the Octagon, having started as an Octagon class! Scottish country dance is a dance form that started in the ballrooms and halls in Scotland in the early 18th century and is still done today. There are branches of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society around the world, and this group is one of those branches. (The Queen is also a patron!) The group runs classes in Ames and Des Moines and help to support and mentor the Celtic Dance Society at ISU, a student group. The dance form is done in sets with a partner. No partner is necessary to come; everyone dances with everyone, and beginners are welcome at any time. A small fee is charged to help pay for use of the Octagon ($30 for 10 weeks), and the teachers volunteer their time and expertise. The group hosts several special events throughout the year, including dance socials both in Ames and Des Moines, a day school workshop and mini ball at the end of January. The grand ball is in the spring.
